Message from Salem HOG Director Bryce Campbell:

Hey All,

Richard Farmer has volunteered to chair the 2015 poker run committee, which will have its first meeting on Sunday, December 21, at 12 noon at Salem HD. This will be our December meeting.

The money we earn from the poker run pays for the Let It Ride and Pot Of Gold prizes, gifts and awards for the Christmas party, and about 90% of the summer or Christmas party. In 2013, it paid $2300 for our Christmas party at Oregon Garden. It also lets us donate to worthy charities that we choose.

We invest a significant amount of seed money for the run, such as prize money, supplies, insurance, posters, and advertising. We need your participation to make the run a success so we can continue to fund the parties and prizes during the year.

Since the poker run is a chapter project, we need some help from you, the members. If all of us help a little, then we can get it done without burning out those who take on a larger share. You can choose how much time to provide, since we have tasks ranging from making copies, to picking ride routes, to posting flyers and signs. You can help with registration, pass out game cards to participants or the prizes to winners, or even shuffle cards. It’s your choice.

Save this date on your calendar: July 12, 2015. Then, let’s have a big turnout for the meeting and really kick-off our 2015 poker run. Hope to see you there.

The 2014 Chilly Buns Run

Don Nash’s Chilly Buns Poker Run! February 23, 2014

Mark your calendars for the last Sunday in February and come enjoy a Chilly Buns ride around the valley.

We’ll start at the traditional place, BiMart on Shaff Road in Stayton. 10 am to start, last bike out at 11.

Route of just less than 100 miles. The end point will be the American Legion in Albany. This year we’ll have a poker run style event to increase participation and safety.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The May general membership meeting will be held on Thursday May 30th instead of Tuesday May 24th because of a Keizer Elks event and Memorial Day weekend. Thursday nights are their steak night which is great! But it is also busy so if you plan on eating before the meeting, we recommend being there by 5:30 pm.

GROUP NOTICE: We are moving Salem HOG from the old Yahoo group due to problems with administrator privileges. We are in the process of migrating to the new Yahoo group “SalemHOGChapter.”

Some of you have already received an invitation to join the new group. Others will be receiving an invitation shortly but you don’t have to wait for an invite.

New Meeting Location for Salem HOG Chapter

Message from Salem HOG Director Mark Dostal:

The final votes have been tallied and the result is that the monthly general membership meetings are relocating to the Keizer Elks Lodge on the 4th Tuesday of every month beginning in February. A total of 62 members voted of which 40 opted for the relocation. Of the other 3 options; 11 voted to remain at the Salem Elks, 6 wanted to stay at the Salem Elks until a suitable Saturday morning location could be found, and 5 would have liked to relocate to Keizer Elks until a suitable Saturday morning location could be found.

The Keizer Elks Lodge #2472 is located in Keizer at 4250 Cherry Ave NE and the meeting times will not change with the exception that the meetings will be held on the 4th Tuesday every month instead of the 2nd Tuesday. As we’ve already held our January meeting, the first meeting at the new location will be Tuesday, February 26th. Meetings will begin at 7 pm but the lodge will be open to all HOG members beginning at 5:30 pm for dinner, beverages, and camaraderie with other members.

Similar to the Salem Elks, the bar is open for beverages of your choice, and you go the end of the bar where the menu hangs to place your order which is then brought to your table when ready. You are expected to bus and clean up your own tables after the meeting. Tuesday nights are their burger night and the menu includes:

double 1/4 pound cheeseburger $3.00
chili burger $3.25
hot dog $1.25
chili dog $2.50

Please remember that one major change is that no one is allowed to wear any kind of head covering in the Keizer Elks Lodge so please remove your ball caps and do-rags before entering. There is a buzzer at the inside set of doors which you will need to press when entering. Just let the person who answers know that you are there for the HOG meeting and the door will be unlocked for you.

Hello everyone, your board has firmed up this year’s Christmas Party and its cost.

The party will be at the Oregon Gardens, starting at 6pm, on Friday, November 30th. Now all that is left is for you to sign up and come have a great time.

Cost this year is $10 per member which includes an 18% gratuity. The total price is $30 but in recognition of all of your hard work and participation in chapter events this year, the chapter is picking up $20 of that for members. Guests will be required to pay the full price of $30. It is preferred that you pay no later than the November meeting, but if you can’t make it, you can pay at the door the night of the party.

Chinese Auction (Raffle style drawings) Everyone will receive one raffle ticket upon entry to the party and additional tickets will be for sale with proceeds going to the chapter’s treasury.

50/50 drawings (both halves will be given away)

Open lounge after the party

Special room rate of $69.00 for those who wish to stay the night. This price includes all-you-can eat breakfast buffet and garden tickets the following day.

Suggested gift price for the “HOG” Gift Exchange is $10.00 & participation is optional. If you want to participate, bring a gift. If not, just set back and enjoy watching people steal each other’s gifts. Th Chinese Auction also needs gifts and these are usually of a hiher qality than the gift exchange. Examples of last years auction items were gift certificates, bottles of wine, etc.

A sign-up sheet was passed around at the October 16th meeting and will be again passed around again at the November 13th meeting. If you can’t make it to either meeting, you can reply to this email with your name and the name of any guest and I will add you to the list.

November 13th is the deadline for sign-up as we need to give the Oregon Gardens a firm number of attendees the next day.

Winner: Salem HOG Chili Cook-Off

2012 Salem HOG Chili Cook-Off Winner 

Congratulations to Dana Johnston who won a hotly contested chili cook-off event. The event was held on March 24, 2012 at the Salem Harley-Davidson dealership on Silverton Road. The weather cooperated, giving us a beautiful day for chili, music and great fun with our fellow Harley riders.

Dana had to fend off some 20 or so other competitors to win the cook-off and the voting was close! Perhaps he’ll cook up a batch for one of our rides this season… and if you intend to dethrone him as the Chili king, you better start perfecting that chili recipe right now!
